Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing System Review

Keurig K10

The Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing System is a single cup coffee maker created to use at home. It’s the same coffee maker as the Keurig B31, just renamed. The Keurig K10 is perfect for home use. There are three cup sizes for you to choose from: 6oz, 8oz and 10oz.

While the Mini Plus uses the more expensive K-cups instead of regular ground coffee, you are able to use a reusable K-cup filter to brew your favorite ground coffee, and to keep additional costs lower. the My K-cup reusable coffee filter is not included when you buy the Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing system.

Keurig K10 Recalled

In 2014 Keurig recalled the K10/B31/B10 coffee makers produced prior to July 2014 due to a possible burn hazard. Check your brewer here to see if it’s listed as one of the recalled coffee makers.

Description Of The Keurig K10

Before there was the Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing System you had the Keurig B31. Both models are exactly the same, just the model number has changed. The Keurig K10 is a single cup coffee maker that uses K-cups to create the perfect tasting cup of coffee. By forcing hot pressured water through the K-cup the brewing takes place within 2 minutes. While the K-cups can be expensive, you have the option to buy the My K-cup Reusable Filter to use your own choice of ground coffee.

Since there is no water reservoir you can only brew one cup of coffee or tea at a time. This means that you will need to refill the water and wait between making two cups of coffee so the water can reheat. If you are using this for more than one person at a time, this can be a hassle. However for a single person, or a household where only one person drinks coffee, this should not be a problem. You have the option to make 6, 8 or 10 ounces of coffee per cup.

This single cup coffee maker is very easy to use. LED lights will help you identify in which step of the process you are. There is an area where you can store the power cord when not in use (it’s not retractable). Its size makes it a pefect fit for small spaces (RVs, vacation homes, dorms, …). You also have the option to choose between several colors.

How To Make Your Coffee With The Keurig K10

Once you have your Keurig K10 set up, it’s recommended that you first do an initial cleaning brew. This is the same process as a regular brew, without adding the K-cup.

To make your coffee, the following process is followed:

  • make sure that the coffee maker is plugged in and press the “Power” button.
  • once the “add water indicator” flashes blue you lift the cold water reservoir lid.
  • pour water anywhere within the cold water reservoir until it reaches up to the rim of your desired fill level on the water level guide (minimum of 6 oz.). Lower the lid. (do not fill when the handle is up as you will not get an accurate measure)
  • Lift the handle. At this point the water will drain from the cold water reservoir into the brewer.
  • Place your mug on the drip tray.
  • Insert the K-cup pack in the K-cup pack holder.
  • Wait until all the water has drained into the brewer before lowering the handle completely.
  • Once the “brew” button flashes blue, press it.
  • The “brew” button will flash red while the water is heating. After two minutes it will remain red when the beverage starts to dispense.
  • Enjoy your coffee!

User Tips

While I went through all the information available on the Keurig K10, I collected a few tips users shared. I hope this will help you brew the perfect cup of coffee when you purchase the Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing System:

  • Use a cup of vinegar during the initial cleaning brew to remove any lingering plastic taste and smell. After this you will need to do a few more brews without a K-cup to make sure that you don’t leave any vinegar taste.
  • Remove the K-cup immediately after brewing to avoid clogged needles
  • To make sure you don’t have too much water, use the cup you want to drink from to measure the water.
  • Besides the My K-cup reusable filter, there are other brands available that work just as well: Cafe Cup, Melitta and Ekobrew are a few brands that fit perfectly in your Keurig K10.

Consumer Reviews

At the time of writing this review, the Keurig K10 is a bestseller on Amazon. It’s ranked as the number 2 Single-Serve Brewers bestseller. With 742 customer reviews and an average rating of 4.1 stars it comes highly recommended.

Most people love the taste of the coffee and the fact that it doesn’t take up a lot of space on your counter. Others recommend the wide variety of beverages you can choose from.

While few users complain about the fact that it stops working after a rather short amount of time, my research found that most of the issues can be blamed on the fact that the coffee maker needs to be descaled and cleaned regularly.

Other users have found that you shouldn’t use chilled water as your coffee won’t be as hot as it could be. It’s better to use room temperature water. This has been confirmed by the manufacturer.

When you read the user guide, you might see the following alarming statement: “WARNING – this product contains chemicals, including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.” When checking with Keurig Support I was reassured and told that their machines have been thoroughly tested and proven to be safe. All the parts that come in contact with water, including the K-cups are BPA free and FDA approved for the temperatures they encounter.

The majority of people who bought and reviewed the Keurig K10 Mini Plus Brewing System are happy with their purchase. While I agree that it’s a great purchase for home use you might want to keep in mind the waiting time between two cups for the water to heat, the use (and extra cost) of K-cups (or using a reusable filter) and the cup sizes available.
